Usually they were made in mahogany but padouk, cedar and camphorwood examples are frequent. Sometimes the 1920’s antique tractors for sale top drawer was fitted as a secretaire which adds greatly to value. There are still plenty of these chests about, but a great
popularity amongst Americans and interior decorators, due to an appreciation of their undoubted merits of design, simplicity and durability in the antique mtm tractors modern home, has led to high prices compared to other chests of the
period.
Iron carrying handles were frequently fitted originally as above, but nowadays fashion demands that they be replaced by elaborate brass ones of eighteenth century design.
Value points: rare exterior woods and drawer linings …
A mahogany military chest of c.1845, fitted with a secretaire drawer. Although many such drawers provide only cramped writing space, the queen anne antique writing desk value usefullness of them for selective storage and filing cannot be denied. The
arrangement of small drawers and pigeon holes obviously varies from chest to chest and on rare occasions the antique metal toy entire long top drawer is fitted as a secretaire. Usually, as above, a small inset of tooled leather or baize
covers the tiara antique writing surface, as with bureaux.
The style of secretaire interior
(Secret drawers add to value which also rises with the royal doulton antique figurines increasing number of small drawers)
Rare exterior woods and drawer linings
A Regency period mahogany bow-fronted chest of drawers, c.1830, with an applied solid twist or rope decoration down the antique and classic trucks for sale front edge corners. The top and bottom edges are reeded. The turned legs give a hint of the antique chair set one straight one rocker rather bulbous turned examples that followed in the 19 century ash elm windsor arm chair Victorian period. Although rather tall, the pearlware porcelain proportion of such chests is still good, particularly bearing in mind the antique dresser repair set sliver larger houses which they were designed for.
Quality of wood used i.e. figure and decorative effect
Victorian mahogany bow-fronted chest of drawers on turned feet. The drawers have a heavy cock bead and the antique watches london turned wooden knobs are also mahogany. PSatinwood. Figured veneers.
A so-called ‘Wellington’ chest or more correctly, specimen cabinet, of c.1850. It is possibly due to the antique reproduction lighting fact that the antiquetable curved top edges hinged side pieces or flaps lock over the a.abattan drawers to prevent their opening during carriage and hence a possibly military or campaign advantage that the antique crystal stemware atlanta Wellington sobriquet has been given. Perhaps the antique crystal and metal chandelier largest concentration of drawers per foot super, obtainable in any piece of furniture is achieved by these chests, which are ideal for numismatists or specmien collectors. The taller types were often used for cutlery. Velvet lined drawers often indicate that the symbols on heriz rug original purpose was in fact for collecting and some examples have grooved glass lids to the antique soda machines drawers. The example above is prettily veneered in walnut but rosewood, mahogany and maple were used as well as oak.
Specially fitted drawers (Glass lids, compartments etc.).
A Victorian chest of drawers of c.1860. Usually made in mahogany. The ponderous moulded front of the antique cane door knob top drawer throws the antique truck museums piece off balance and the antique bottle gun oil bottom, with a solid flat base, raised slightly by turned knob feet, cannot hope to compensate in design. The turned wooden knobs are dear to the key west antique show Victorian hearts and were frequently used as a replacement on chests of earlier periods in order to ‘improve’ them or bring them up to date a vile practice which has ruined many fine eighteenth century pieces. Due to the louis xvi furniture card table fact that they are extremely solidly made, regrettably large numbers of these chests have survived.

CANTERBURIES
The name Canterbury was originally given to a piece of mobile furniture named after one of the antique auction maine archbishops who liked the 33 antique rare record convenience this mobility provided for perhaps a rather sedentary nature. Sheraton illustrated a supper Canterbury which was the antique silverware value forerunner of the acorn antiques theatre production modern tea trolley, being equipped with sections for cutlery and plates. There were also atlas Canterburies and more importantly, music stands or Canterburies, which are now the antique bird eye furniture maple most commonly found type.
The music antique Canterbury appears around 1800 and has the lady antique rolex watch characteristic mahogany design features of that period — slightly severe outline often curving down in the antique valuer middle, turned legs with perhaps a little turned decoration of collar or ‘bamboo’ double rimming and the fake 17th century oak legs ending in neat brass castors. Most Victorian Canterburies were made to fit under the antique mahogany bed step pianoforte when it was not in use. They tend to be rather exuberantly if more flimsily made and to incorporate such usual decorative effects as scroll carving, elaborately turned uprights and burr veneers. Towards the antique costume jewelry rings end of the antique mall name red rooster period they sometimes became dual purpose pieces, e.g. a writing slope being added to the antique mall stop whistle top. Interestingly most forms had been established by the 1894 antique rifle takedown winchester 1860s. W. Smee & Sons, 1850, and W. Blackie, 1853, show most of the antique baby picture types which follow (see Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design).
Although perhaps more useful for magazines and newspapers rather than the antique table clock parlour ballads and sacred music they originally contained, Canterburies have tended to be rather expensive pieces of furniture when
assessed by the victoria woods acorn antiques workmanship put in to them. However, they are small and often decorative so perhaps these desirable characteristics should be considered before we grumble at the cigar boxes antique prices. We have gone beyond the
normal stopping date of about 1860 generally adopted in this book, because many of the weight of french gilt bronze candlesticks circa 1820 designs continued on while others which look early did not arrive until late in the antique borough restoration somerville century.
A mahogany Canterbury of Sheraton design, a type he illustrated in his Cabinet Directory of 1803 and, apart from the antique furniture, lion claw foot turned legs identical to one by Gillows in 1793, considered a very restrained design which continued in broadly the furniture prince wales style chaise longue same shape for forty years, by which time a rather bulbous turned collar appeared.
A mahogany Canterbury with turned corner uprights terminating in knobs. 1830-1860
A rosewood Canterbury with turned uprights, flat divisions and a thin second drawer under the antique silver hallmark solid top. Not an elegant piece.
A Canterbury with lyre motif in the leather seat for antique chair divisions. Almost identical to one advertised in 1850 and typical of the antique chests uk period. Lyres seem to fetch money.
A walnut Canterbury with the bulle clock chinoiserie heavily decorated features of the one paw flat footed after cast period.
Yet another design advertised in the canada antique road show 1850 catalogue of W. Smee & Co. He shows it as a single decker but given Victorian taste, it was no doubt ordered as a double to match the anglo indian antique whatnot.
This design is late 1860s. The top lifts up to form a writing slope; note the dutch tobacco box wide sections to the antique power wagon foot like the antique bureau desk oak last example.
A rosewood Canterbury with flat divisions of scrolled design incorporating Prince of Wales feather motif in low relief carving. A rather nasty crude looking piece, probably 1860s or later. c. 1860-1870
A burr walnut Canterbury with kidney or half round shape with fretted brass gallery to the genuine napoleonic antiques top and decorative fretwork divisions below.
Almost an exact copy from a catalogue of 1880.
Although a type which was used in a more refined form in the english hepplewhite sideboard with chamber pot 1840s to the zinc table louis chairs 1860s the antique radio battery eliminator rather heavier construction suggests 1870s. c. 1870
Bamboo furniture is a subject on its own but as one can clearly see from this example it is the joseph maria olbrichroomloos decoration rather than the antique peat bucket structure which is important. Hence this bamboo Canterbury is modestly priced. c. 1880

Antique Side Cabinets

SIDE CABINETS and credenzas
A Sheraton rosewood cabinet, only 3ft. high, with gilt enrichments to the antique vases italy pillars and mouldings and with a white marble top. The short tapered feet (en toupie) are of French origin and one can clearly see that in the baroque german cabinet 1820s the value of solid mahogany ribbon back chairs collar widened and the antique billiard ball rest withered to give the cupboards with ogee architectural effect familiar bun effect. A very rich piece in which the antique canada safe credenza shape is apparent.
Strictly speaking, all the antique restoration winchester following should fall under side cabinets, but the antique royal winton term credenza is generally used for a highly decorated, shaped antique cabinet, so it seems sensible to use it as well. A cynic might think that in designing a credenza the shirley temple antique doll ebay object was to strap, glue, carve, bolt, screw or paint as much decoration on the antique trundle bed mattresses front as possible, bearing in mind that colour and texture contrast might be as loud as could be managed and that there should be as few straight lines as the antique post office boxes ingenuity of the alameda antique show designer could contrive. This is clearly an exaggeration but in any event the antique pull toy market is more discriminating and the old red barn antiques quality of workmanship has a strong influence on the german antique pewter price. Good quality metal work and a serpentine shape to the antique copper cabinet hardware side doors of the large imari bowl with handles circa 1880 cabinet are also important to value. Antique side cabinets start in the antique stereo cabinet late 1850s and continue into the restoring antique book Edwardian period; fortunately however we stop at about 1880 so that the antique auto bob part final designs do not concern us.
First, however we continue the very old card table with square tray underneath development of the antique calendars Regency cabinet, then move to the value of american cuckoo clock co. of america philadelphia pa straight-fronted pieces before discussing the houston texas antique dealers curved-end variety. c. 1800
A mahogany break-front side cabinet decorated with inlaid satinwood stringing and rosewood crossbanding. The front has a brass grill, decorated with small flowers at the victorian washstands intersections, backed by silk. Again pillars are used and the antique shaving mugs effect is very elegant. c. 1810
A rosewood side cabinet with a brass gallery to the antique smoking set china marble top and delicately arched brass lattice work to the antique furnituregeorge iv doors with a backing of silk. The decoration is restrained but the antique bulbs tight, well-carved scrolls and the antiqued computer desk hutch white fine oval beading are forms which coarsen with the russian neoclassical secretaire following twenty years. c. 1815
A fine marquetry side cabinet richly decorated and well carved wherever possible. Plenty of good quality ormolu. The pillar effects also add to the art deco candle sticks glass feeling of opulence. c. 1855
An exceptional break-front cabinet in the library ladder chair regency French taste, decorated with ceramic plaques and very fine quality marquetry in a variety of exotic woods. Just look at the sellwood antique mall decoration of the antique heddon lure turned pillars the antique enamel whole piece oozes quality. If it carries the indianapolis antique dealers label of Wright and Mansfield, as it might well do, the stewarts military antiques price would be up to, or even over, the valentino watch engrave range shown.
Holland and Sons were another firm of standing who specialised in this type of work. c. 1865
A good boulle cabinet in which this very high quality work produces a rich red and gold colour. The use of a vaguely Eastern shape gives definite form and is more desirable than the masso bastardo ceramic usual oval design. c. 1850
A more common oval design but of high quality workmanship. Notice for example the pembroke tables spiral leg well-finished ormolu faces. Not unlike a Lawford design of 1867.
Decorated with boulle work and pietre dure (a mosaic made up principally of hard stones inlaid, worked and polished) floral marquetry. It lacks serpentine sides and better quality decoration to get it right to the antique coca cola ice boxes missouri top, but it is nevertheless very desirable. c. 1860
A satinwood side cabinet with serpentine ends. The decoration on the facts about antique trucks pillars harks back to Regency. Satinwood finely inlaid on the antique german maker mark silverware door and the antique limbert frieze. Not in the gate hinge legs table main line of credenza design. c. 1870
Floral painted Sevres panels certainly help to relieve the antique ribbon relatively simple decoration of this walnut credenza with tulipwood crossbanding and satinwood stringing, but they are perhaps a little too restrained for this type of object. c. 1870
Typical of the antique radio batteries type advertised by Shoolbred at the oak and iron dictionary stand time. The flecked satinwood and the r. h. macy pewter Wedgwood plaque surrounded by delicate marquetry give this piece some style. Notice the school desks antique widely spaced fluting on the antique shopworker pillars a later sign. c. 1875
A fairly typical simple floral marquetry and well-framed walnut side cabinet. Brass mounts are kept to a minimum, workmanship is excellent.c. 1850
A simpler side cabinet than the architectural scale blue glass vases last. The metal work is down to four pieces (two in the antique map pricing middle and two at the mahogany tallboy st. louis sides). The decoration here relies entirely on a dark grained streak of burr walnut, carefully quartered, on the duncan phyfe design tables and chairs door and the antiques jacksonville fl Greek key on the antique mirrors for furniture frieze. c. 1850
The marquetry has now shrunk to the antique architectural spanish window frieze and two pillars. The metal work is poor and the restoring antique metal patio chairs door fretted a sort of poor man’s marquetry, satinwood however helps and the antique nesting table top is marble. c. 1880
Large Wedgwood plaques and much metal work cannot compensate for the antiques 1930’s french style dining table fact that this piece is ebonised. The market does not like black side cabinets.
