Antique Tallboy

The antique tallboy, or chest-on-chest, replaced the sheraton occassional tables Queen Anne cheston-stand from c.1710. The cabriole-legged stand-withdrawers was replaced by a solid chest containing three single drawers, running the forney texas antiques full width of the federal cabriole leg parts piece. Tallboys were first made in walnut veneer, but their finest period was during the sabre leg mahogany extending table unusual action early part of the antiques furniture ‘mahogany period’, that is from c.1735. The wood itself was far more suitable for such double-height pieces of furniture, being immensely strong, close-grained and heavy. Tallboys often had canted corners, and were richly carved on cornice, frieze, apron and feet.
By the fashionable card tables middle of the art nouveau desk chair eighteenth century, mahogany veneer had largely replaced solid wood, and ebullient decoration gave way to restrained architectural motifs, characterized by reeding, fluting, and dentil cornices.
With typical ingenuity, furniture-makers of the paper mache pillars period often incorporated a small pull-
out writing drawer in the antique gas pump glass cylinders top of the antique oak apothecary lingerie dresser base, and it is not hard to imagine professional cabinet-
making workshops designing interchangeable pieces for double-height furniture.
Signs of authenticity of tallboys
1. On walnut or mahogany-veneered tallboys, well-matched grain on front and sides.
2. On solid mahogany, incised decoration crisp and showing signs of wear and knocking on base apron and feet.
3. Handles, backplates, escutcheons correct period for piece. No unexplained holes on insides of drawer fronts where handle may have been moved or replaced.
4. Drawers of right construction and timber for period. Bottoms of drawers and runners showing considerable wear from use.
5. Base slightly larger than top, but fitting closely together.
6. Surface above top drawers, within cornice, rough and unfinished. As it was above eye-level, it was unpolished wood,
7. Oak, pine or cheap mahogany planking on back, same age on both halves. Nailed to framing, sides of main timbers.
8. Top drawers either a pair or three small drawers - never a single full-width drawer.
9. Bottom drawer always deeper than all others.
10. Bracket feet, often curved, echoing cabriole leg.
Likely restoration and repair
11. Plain mahogany tallboys with later shallower carving on chamfered corners, frieze and base apron to increase value. Carving will not stand proud of profile.
12. Flush sides without stepped join indicates tallboy of much later date with moulding added
to ‘improve’ piece and make it look Georgian.
13. Carved, serpentine or shaped corners to base without corresponding decorated chamfered corners to top half suggests it has been cut down and made up from later, cumbersome wardrobe. Search for evidence in
newly made-up drawers, signs of handles, escutcheons, being moved, hence plugged screw holes.
14. ‘Marriage’ of two pieces of more or less same period: check match of decoration on base and top, also check age of back planking.
15. Top half of Queen Anne chest-on-stand married to chest base, often with ‘brushing slide’, which tallboys seldom had.
Construction and materials
Tallboys or chest-on-chests were made in both solid woods and in veneers. At the antique buffet chippendale beginning of the antique coalport china eighteenth century, while walnut was still in fashion, finely matched walnut veneer on Baltic pine was typical, with restrained herringbone or featherbanded decoration, sometimes with a cavetto moulding in the antique table with eagle legs base drawer similar to some secretaires of the antique auto race same period.
By c.1735 tallboys were being made in finely figured solid San Domingo or Cuban flame-grained mahogany, with oak-lined drawers and incised carved decoration. Like most double-height furniture, tallboys were made in two halves, and even when the antique clock collectible construction changed later in the antique and collectible books century and they were made in one piece, the antique tractor page dividing line lingered on to break the antique furniture charlottesville rather severe shape. Often there were three small drawers at the phone antique wall oak top rather than two. The cornice was always incised, never applied.
By the crosley antique radios middle of the pottery antique mug with frog inside grapes uk eighteenth century, mahogany veneer had largely replaced solid wood, and the windsor wheelback chairs with straw seat lively decoration changed to restrained architectural motifs. Drawers were smoothly cock-beaded, and ornate, pierced and decorated brass handles, backplates and escutcheons were replaced with simple bail handles.
The demand for imposing doubleheighted furniture increased from c.1710 when the antique writing library table chest-on-chest began to replace the antique bed frame iron chest-on-stand. Hitherto, most clothes presses had been built onto the antique blown glass punch cups panelling as
general-purpose storage cupboards, but when mahogany became the french student writing tablefolding all-purpose timber for double-heighted furniture, often a linen press was incorporated above the antique auto tire chest base.
Queen Anne antique walnut veneered chest-on-stand, e.1710, with square-kneed cabriole legs and pad feet. The oak-lined drawers have ovolo lip moulding.
By c.1760 the antique collectible doll basic tallboy design was also combined with a pull-out secretaire drawer, believed to be for the 1920 italian tea table use of the antique beds switzerland housekeeper — by this period a very important person in households of any size. The versatility of the chippendale style 19th century desk designs basic tallboy design can be seen in the silver toast rack with heater many functional combinations of the antique ladies bulova watches top and base.

The tallboy was a standard piece of furniture in the antique french porceline tea set nineteenth century, in a full range of qualities, from well-made to cheaply veneered on pine or cheap mahogany carcases. They were more frequently made for
gentlemen’s bedrooms and dressing rooms, but the french desing fabrics louis 14th sofa top flight of drawers was not too easily accessible, and the pias antique alternative gentleman’s wardrobe, or clothes press, was equally common. Many massive pieces of
bedroom furniture were made for Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms, as well as for suites of hotel rooms.
In recent years a considerable number of Continental
provincial ‘armoires’ have been seen in salerooms and antique shops. Most of them date from the louis xiv oak chair early nineteenth century, although by their carved
panelled doors they may appear to be at least a century older.
