English Antique Side and Display Cabinet

CABINETS: SIDE AND DISPLAY
An antique cabinet is a very variable piece of furniture made in numerous forms and for many purposes throughout the split baluster turning leg 18th and 19th century. Preceded by the antique yazoo mower prestigious cabinet on stand.

DISPLAY CABINETS ON STANDS
In the collectible antique camera late 16thC and the antique john deere equipment 17th century the antique cars for sale in florida richest people kept their curios in cabinets containing numerous small drawers. Many of these cabinets were imported from the antiquetables/clawfeet Continent particularly from Italy and Southern Germany and were valuable and decorative objects in themselves, being made from exotic materials such as ebony, ivory and tortoiseshell with plaques of inlaid marbles or precious gemstones. Chinese and Japanese lacquer cabinets were especially prized particularly after about 1670 as were those of fine Dutch marquetry after about 1680.
Most were mounted on English-made stands sometimes with a matching cresting; these could be quite simple, with turned supports linked by turned or shaped stretchers (see CHESTS ON STANDS, p. 88) or very
elaborate with bold, gilded carving.
DISPLAY CABINETS
The practice of storing and displaying precious objects in glazed cabinets dates from the the use of swastikas in antique oriental carpets first half of the qianlong plate 18th century when wealthy people began collecting fine porcelain and books on a large scale. Few pieces were designed solely for display (although designs were published in popular pattern books), but usually formed the antique toy tonka truck upper part of a chest, cupboard, bureau or secretaire. During the monopodium style leg second half of the 1930s gate leg tables 19th century free-standing glazed display cabinets were made in revived 18th century styles, some of Chinese Chippendale type, others rather loose interpretations of Sheraton designs. The majority are in mahogany and glazed on three sides, raised from the antique mantel mirror floor on tall, narrow, straight legs. ‘Chippendale’ pieces are sometimes highly carved, while those in Sheraton style are delicate and often inlaid with stringing, fans and shells. Sometimes a panelled or cupboard area beneath the antique lamp lighting recreation sulfur shelves is painted with flowers or landscape scenes. The glazing bars on these are invariably applied to a single sheet of glass; they do not enclose a number of small panels cut to shape as they would on an 18th century piece.
Range from simple breakfront or one or two-door cupboards, with flat tops and plinth bases, to more complex pieces with various shelves, drawers, cupboards and turned or straight feet.

niers (and ebonised ‘aesthetic’ or ‘Art Furniture’ cabinets (from 1870 onwards). These were composed of numerous shelves, small cupboards, niches, spindled galleries, bevelled mirrors and panels of embossed
‘leather’ paper or gilding. These were followed by similar cabinets of ‘architectural Queen Anne’ style, with mirrored and pedimented superstructure.

ENGLISH CABINET
This writing cabinet is made of mahogany, the antique corner display cabinet lead windows grain of the richard ginori art deco vases wood providing its decoration. A writing slide pulls out from the antique clock parts lower case, which has a drawer below. The upper section doors open to reveal drawers and
pigeonholes. c.1800.
